If you've ever shopped for a camera or smartphone, you've probably seen megapixels advertised as one of the most important specifications.
While megapixels certainly matter, they're only one piece of the puzzle. A camera with more megapixels doesn't automatically produce better photographs, just as a larger canvas doesn't automatically create a better painting.
Understanding what megapixels actually measure will help you make better decisions when choosing a camera and preparing images for print.

In reality, these cameras often combine multiple pixels together using a process called pixel binning to improve image quality in everyday lighting conditions.
As a result, the final image may still be saved at a lower megapixel count while benefiting from improved brightness and reduced image noise.
Higher megapixel numbers don't always mean your everyday photos contain that many individual pixels.
Is There Such a Thing as Too Many Megapixels?
Not necessarily—but more isn't always better.
Extremely high-resolution cameras produce:
