"What resolution do you print at?"
It's a great question—but it also highlights one of the biggest misconceptions in digital printing.
The resolution of your image and the resolution of our printer are two completely different things.
Understanding the difference will help you prepare your files with confidence and avoid worrying about technical specifications that don't affect your final print.

Your file and our printer each have their own resolution.
Image Resolution (PPI)
This is the amount of image detail contained in your photograph.
It determines how large your image can be printed while maintaining good quality.
Printer Resolution (DPI)
This refers to the microscopic ink droplets or print dots our professional printers place on the print media.
It describes how the printer reproduces your image—not how much detail your image contains.
The two measurements are related, but they are not the same thing.

Image Resolution (PPI)

Image resolution is measured in Pixels Per Inch (PPI).
This tells us how much information your photograph contains.
For example:

  • A 6000 × 4000 pixel image contains 24 million pixels.
  • Those pixels determine how large the image can be printed before quality begins to decrease.

This is why we recommend evaluating your image based on its pixel dimensions rather than worrying about the printer's specifications.

Printer Resolution (DPI)

Printer resolution is measured in Dots Per Inch (DPI).
Professional printers reproduce photographs by placing extremely small dots of ink or dye onto the final print.
Modern professional printers can place thousands of microscopic dots within a single inch.
These dots work together to reproduce the colors, gradients, and fine details contained within your image.
This is part of the printer's technology and happens automatically during production.

Why You Don't Need a 1440 DPI Image

A common misconception is:

"If the printer prints at 1440 DPI, I need a 1440 DPI file."

Fortunately, that's not how digital printing works.
Your image only needs to contain enough photographic detail for the desired print size.
The printer's job is to reproduce that detail using its own printing technology.
The printer creates thousands of microscopic dots from each image pixel, allowing it to produce smooth gradients and exceptional detail.
