How Large Can I Print My Photo?
Updated June 2026 • 5-minute read
One of the most common questions we receive is:
"How large can I print my image?"
The answer depends on the image dimensions, viewing distance, and the level of detail you expect in the final print.
Fortunately, most modern cameras and smartphones are capable of producing prints much larger than many people realize.
Quick Answer
As a general guideline:
Quality Level | Resolution |
|---|---|
Excellent | 150+ PPI |
Very Good | 100–150 PPI |
Acceptable | 72–100 PPI |
Review Recommended | Below 72 PPI |
Large wall displays are often viewed from farther away, which means they can look excellent at lower resolutions than smaller prints viewed up close. |

Why Viewing Distance Matters
A large print is rarely viewed from only a few inches away.
For example:
Small Prints
Typically viewed from:
- 1–2 feet away
Require more pixel density.
Large Wall Art
Typically viewed from:
- 5–10 feet away
Can maintain excellent visual quality at lower pixel densities.
Billboards
Often viewed from:
- 50 feet or more
Can look excellent despite having relatively low pixel density.
Because of this, many images can be printed much larger than people expect.
Factors That Affect Maximum Print Size
Subject Matter
Highly detailed landscapes may benefit from more resolution.
Abstract artwork may allow for larger enlargements.
Viewing Distance
The farther away the artwork is viewed, the larger it can typically be printed.
Print Medium
Metal, acrylic, canvas, and fine art paper all reproduce detail differently.
Personal Expectations
Some customers prefer maximum sharpness while others prioritize overall visual impact.
Common Misconceptions
My image is only 72 DPI so it cannot be printed.
Not necessarily.
The pixel dimensions of the image are usually more important than the DPI value stored in the file.
Smartphone photos cannot be printed large.
Modern smartphones are capable of producing surprisingly large prints.
Bigger is always better.
The best print size depends on the artwork, wall space, and viewing environment.
Our Recommendation
If you're unsure about the ideal print size, start by considering the space where the artwork will be displayed.
A well-sized print often has more impact than simply choosing the largest size available.
If you'd like guidance, our team is happy to review your file and recommend a print size that balances image quality, viewing distance, and visual impact.
