If you've ever prepared a photo for printing, you've probably come across the terms PPI and DPI. They're often used interchangeably, but they actually describe two very different things.


Understanding the difference will help you better evaluate your images and avoid one of the most common mistakes people make when preparing files for print.



Quick Answer


PPI (Pixels Per Inch) describes the resolution of a digital image.


DPI (Dots Per Inch) describes how a printer reproduces that image on paper, metal, acrylic, or another material.


In other words:


  • PPI refers to your image.
  • DPI refers to your printer.


Although the two terms are related, they are not the same thing.



What Is PPI?


PPI stands for Pixels Per Inch.


It tells you how many pixels from your digital image will be printed within one inch of the finished print.


For example, if a photo measures 6000 × 4000 pixels, it could produce:

20" × 13"

300 PPI

30" × 20"

200 PPI

40" × 27"

150 PPI


The pixel dimensions never change.


Only the print size changes, which changes the resulting PPI.



What Is DPI?


DPI stands for Dots Per Inch.


Unlike PPI, DPI doesn't describe your photo.


Instead, it describes the printer itself.


Professional printers don't place one "dot" for every pixel.


Instead, each pixel is reproduced using many tiny droplets or dots of ink (or dye, depending on the printing technology) to accurately recreate colors and tonal transitions.


Modern professional printers often print at resolutions of 720 DPI, 1440 DPI, or even higher, regardless of the PPI of the image being printed.



Why People Confuse PPI and DPI


Years ago, many software programs incorrectly labeled image resolution as "DPI."


As a result, people began using the terms interchangeably.


Even today you'll often hear someone say,


"My photo is 300 DPI."


Technically, what they usually mean is:


"My photo will print at approximately 300 PPI."


While most people understand what's being communicated, PPI is the more accurate term when discussing digital images.



Changing DPI Doesn't Add Detail


One of the biggest misconceptions in digital printing is that changing the DPI setting somehow increases image quality.


It doesn't.


Imagine you have a photo that's 3000 × 2000 pixels.


If you simply change the resolution setting from 150 PPI to 300 PPI without adding more pixels, the image still contains exactly the same amount of information.


The only thing that changes is the size it will print.


No new detail is created.



What About Resampling?


Some editing software allows you to increase both the PPI and the pixel dimensions through a process called resampling.


Unlike simply changing the resolution setting, resampling actually creates additional pixels using mathematical calculations or AI.


While modern AI upscaling tools can produce impressive results, they estimate missing information—they don't recover detail that the camera never captured.


Whenever possible, it's always best to begin with the highest-quality original image.



What Resolution Should I Use?


For most photographic prints:


Final Print Resolution

Typical Quality

300 PPI

Outstanding for close viewing

200 PPI

Excellent

150 PPI

Ideal for many wall displays

72–100 PPI

Suitable for many large-format prints viewed from farther away


Professional printing isn't about achieving the highest possible PPI.


It's about having the appropriate PPI for the intended viewing distance.



Why This Matters


Imagine printing two identical photos.


One is printed at an appropriate resolution for its size.


The other has simply had its DPI value changed in editing software without adding any new image information.


Despite the different number shown in the software, both images contain exactly the same photographic detail.


The printer cannot reproduce detail that isn't present in the original image.


That's why photographers should focus on preserving original pixel dimensions instead of worrying about changing the DPI setting.



Frequently Asked Questions


Should I change my image to 300 DPI before uploading?


No.


In most cases, it's best to leave your original image unchanged.


What matters most is the number of pixels your image contains—not manually changing the DPI value.



Why does Photoshop show DPI instead of PPI?


Many editing programs still use the older terminology, even though they are displaying the image's resolution rather than the printer's resolution.



Does a printer print one dot for every pixel?


No.


Professional printers use many microscopic dots to reproduce the color and brightness represented by each pixel.


The printer's DPI is usually much higher than the image's PPI.



Does increasing PPI improve image quality?


Only if additional image information is actually created through resampling or AI upscaling.


Simply changing the number in the Image Size dialog without adding pixels does not improve the original image.

Instead, keep your original photo at its full pixel dimensions and let those pixels determine the maximum print size.
