Digital photos can contain an incredible amount of detail—but they can also be surprisingly large.


To make images easier to store, upload, and share, most devices and websites use a process called image compression.


Compression helps reduce file size, but depending on how it's used, it can also reduce image quality.


Understanding compression will help you preserve your photos and choose the best files for printing.

Image compression reduces the size of a photo so it takes up less storage space and uploads more quickly.


There are two types of compression:


  • Lossless compression preserves all of the original image data.
  • Lossy compression permanently removes some image information to create a smaller file.


For printing, the original image is almost always the best choice.



Why Do Photos Need Compression?


Modern cameras and smartphones create extremely detailed images.


Without compression:


  • Photos would consume much more storage.
  • Uploads would take longer.
  • Sharing images online would be slower.
  • Websites would load more slowly.


Compression makes digital photography practical for everyday use.



Lossless Compression


Lossless compression reduces file size without permanently removing image information.


When the image is opened again, every pixel is restored exactly as it was originally captured.


Think of it like vacuum-sealing a comforter.


It becomes much smaller for storage, but once you open the bag, nothing has been lost.


Common examples include:


  • PNG
  • TIFF (when saved with lossless compression)
  • Some RAW formats


Because no detail is discarded, lossless compression is ideal for editing and archiving.



Lossy Compression


Lossy compression permanently removes some image information.


It does this by identifying details that are less noticeable to the human eye and discarding them to reduce file size.


Think of packing a suitcase.


If you remove a few clothing items, the suitcase becomes smaller—but you can't magically get those clothes back later.


JPEG is the most common lossy image format.


A high-quality JPEG often looks nearly identical to the original, while occupying only a fraction of the storage space.



What Happens When an Image Is Compressed Too Much?


Excessive compression can introduce visible artifacts such as:


  • Blocky textures
  • Blurry fine details
  • Jagged edges
  • Color banding in skies and gradients
  • Smudged textures


These imperfections may not be noticeable on a phone screen, but they often become much more visible in larger prints.



Why Social Media Images Look Softer


Most social media platforms automatically compress uploaded photos.


This helps pages load quickly and reduces storage requirements, but it also removes image information.


If you download that same image later, you're usually downloading the compressed version—not the original file.


For this reason, photos saved from:


  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Messenger
  • WhatsApp
  • Many websites


are often less suitable for large prints than the original image stored on your phone or camera.



Does Saving a JPEG Over and Over Reduce Quality?


Yes.


Every time a JPEG is edited and saved again, additional compression may occur.


This repeated compression can gradually reduce image quality.


Whenever possible:


  • Keep the original file.
  • Make edits from the original rather than repeatedly saving the same JPEG.
  • Export a final version only when you're finished editing.



Bigger File Doesn't Always Mean Better Quality


A large file often contains more image information—but not always.


For example:


  • A high-quality JPEG may produce a beautiful print.
  • A blurry photo saved as a massive TIFF will still be blurry.
  • A screenshot may have a large file size but very few pixels.


Image quality depends on the photograph itself—not just the file size.



Which File Should I Print?


Whenever possible, print from:


  • The original camera file
  • The original smartphone photo
  • A high-quality export from your editing software


Avoid printing from:


  • Screenshots
  • Images downloaded from social media
  • Photos repeatedly saved at low quality
  • Images copied from websites


The closer your print file is to the original capture, the better your final print is likely to be.



Frequently Asked Questions


Is JPEG good enough for printing?


Absolutely.


A high-quality JPEG is excellent for most photographic prints.


In fact, it's one of the most commonly used file formats in professional printing.



Can compression be reversed?


No.


Once image information has been discarded through lossy compression, it generally cannot be recovered.


Some AI tools can improve the appearance of compressed images, but they estimate missing detail rather than restoring the original data.



Why does my photo still look good on my phone?


Phone screens are much smaller than large wall prints.


Small imperfections are often difficult to notice until the image is enlarged.



Should I upload the original photo?


Yes.


Whenever possible, upload the original image directly from your camera or smartphone rather than a version downloaded from social media or messaging apps.



Print Pro Tip


If you have both the original photo and one that was downloaded from Facebook, Instagram, or another social platform, always choose the original. It contains more detail and usually produces a noticeably better print.
