If you've explored your camera's settings, you've probably noticed an option to save photos as RAW.
Professional photographers often recommend shooting in RAW, while most smartphones and cameras save images as JPEG or HEIC by default.
So what exactly is a RAW file, and do you need one to make beautiful prints?
The answer depends on how you plan to use your photos.

A RAW file contains the original image data captured directly by your camera's sensor before most processing has been applied.
Unlike JPEGs, RAW files give photographers much greater flexibility when editing exposure, white balance, shadows, highlights, and color.

What Happens After Shooting RAW?

- Capture the photo in RAW.
- Edit the image in software such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, or Capture One.
- Export the finished image as a high-quality JPEG or TIFF.
- Share or print the exported image.
The RAW file usually remains safely archived in case future edits are needed.
