Metal prints have become one of the most popular ways to display photographs, artwork, and modern décor. They're known for their vibrant colors, exceptional detail, and sleek, contemporary appearance.


But despite the name, the image isn't printed directly onto bare metal.


Instead, most premium metal prints are created using a process called dye sublimation, where special dyes become a gas and permanently bond with a specially coated aluminum panel.

What Is Dye Sublimation?


The word sublimation describes a unique physical process where a solid changes directly into a gas without first becoming a liquid.


Special sublimation dyes are designed to do exactly this when heated.


During printing, the dyes leave the transfer paper as a gas and penetrate the panel's polymer coating.


As the panel cools, the dyes become permanently trapped inside the coating.


Instead of forming a layer on top, the image becomes embedded within the surface.



Why Aluminum?


The aluminum itself isn't what creates the image.


Instead, aluminum provides an ideal foundation because it is:


  • Lightweight
  • Rigid
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Resistant to warping
  • Excellent at transferring heat evenly


Before printing, the aluminum receives a specialized polymer coating designed to accept sublimation dyes.


Without this coating, the dyes would have nothing to bond with.



Step 1: Printing the Transfer Paper


The process begins by printing the digital image onto special transfer paper using sublimation inks.


At this stage, the image often looks slightly dull or muted.


That's completely normal.


The vivid colors develop during the heat transfer process.



Step 2: Preparing the Metal Panel


The coated aluminum panel is carefully cleaned and inspected.


Even tiny particles of dust can become visible in the finished artwork, so cleanliness is essential.


The transfer paper is then precisely aligned with the panel.



Step 3: Heat and Pressure


The transfer paper and aluminum panel are placed into a large heat press.


Under carefully controlled heat, pressure, and time, the dyes transform into a gas.


The gaseous dyes penetrate the polymer coating on the aluminum.


Because the image becomes part of the coating, it won't crack, peel, or flake like some surface-applied printing methods.



Step 4: Cooling


Once removed from the press, the panel cools.


As it cools, the polymer coating hardens again, permanently locking the dyes beneath the surface.


This creates an image that is both vibrant and durable.
