Which Canvas Print Should I Choose?

Which Canvas Print Should I Choose?

Updated September 2026 • 4 minute read

Canvas prints give photographs and artwork a textured, gallery-style appearance. They are a versatile choice for family portraits, landscapes, fine art reproductions, and decorative wall art.

At Artbeat Studios, we offer three canvas surfaces: Giclée Canvas, Metallic Canvas, and Matte Canvas. Your choice affects the print’s sheen and overall presentation.

Quick Answer

Canvas Type

Appearance

A Good Choice For

Giclée Canvas

Classic canvas with a semi-gloss finish

Portraits, fine art reproductions, and natural-looking photography

Metallic Canvas

Semi-gloss with a pearlescent shimmer

Dramatic landscapes, city lights, sunsets, and bold colors

Matte Canvas

Understated finish with minimal glare

Artwork displayed where reflections are a concern

Choose the surface based on your artwork, the lighting in your space, and the appearance you prefer. The most reflective option is not automatically the best choice for every image.

Giclée Canvas

Our Giclée Canvas is a 400 GSM white poly-cotton canvas with a semi-gloss finish.

It provides a traditional canvas presentation with rich color and a gentle sheen. It is a good starting point for portraits, wedding photography, artwork reproductions, and images with subtle gradients or softer color palettes.

Choose Giclée Canvas for a classic photographic or fine-art look without a metallic effect.

Metallic Canvas

Metallic Canvas has a semi-gloss surface with an iridescent, pearlescent appearance.

Its luminous finish adds visual depth and shimmer while retaining the texture of canvas. It works particularly well with dramatic skies, water, cityscapes, night photography, and highly saturated images.

The effect is part of the canvas surface. Metallic Canvas is not an image printed on aluminum.

Choose Metallic Canvas when you want a more luminous, eye-catching interpretation of your image.

Matte Canvas

Our Matte Canvas is a 400 GSM poly-cotton canvas with a low-glare finish.

It is the option to consider when you prefer an understated appearance or want to minimize distracting reflections. Unlike Giclée and Metallic Canvas, it does not have a semi-gloss sheen.

Choose Matte Canvas when reducing surface shine is more important than adding shimmer.

The canvas surface and the wrap style are separate choices.

The canvas is stretched around a wooden support frame with a 1.5-inch depth. This creates a substantial side profile and can be displayed on its own or finished with a compatible float frame.

A shallower, 0.75-inch wrap provides a slimmer profile. Availability depends on the selected size.

Rolled Canvas

Rolled canvas is supplied without stretching or a wooden support frame. Choose this option when you plan to have the print stretched or framed yourself.

Rolled canvas is not ready to hang.

Edge Options

For gallery-wrapped canvas, the edge treatment determines how the sides of the print appear.

Available selections include Mirror Edge and Color Edge.

Review the front and side views in the ordering preview, paying particular attention to faces, lettering, signatures, and important details near the edges.

Edge treatment does not replace checking the front-image crop. A print size with different proportions from your file may still require cropping.

Float Frames

Our canvas float frames surround the stretched artwork with a small gap, creating the appearance that the canvas is floating inside the frame.

Available finishes include:

  • Float White
  • Float Black
  • Float Natural

Our float-frame system is designed for 1.5-inch gallery wraps, rather than the thinner 0.75-inch wraps.

A gallery wrap already has an internal wooden support frame. The optional float frame is the decorative frame around the outside.

Preparing Your Image

Start with the highest-quality original file available rather than a screenshot or a copy downloaded from social media.

For most customers, a high-quality JPEG is a practical choice. Adobe RGB (1998) is our preferred color profile when available.

Check the selected print dimensions and crop before ordering. Do not add your own bleed; our ordering system adds the bleed required for the product.

Canvas naturally gives fine detail a softer presentation than smooth materials such as metal or acrylic. That texture is part of its appeal, but it does not restore missing detail in a blurry or low-resolution file.

Display and Care

Display canvas away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and strong heat sources.

Dust gently with a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning, scrubbing, and spraying cleaners directly onto the artwork.

Careful handling and a stable indoor environment help preserve the print’s appearance over time.

Common Misconceptions

All canvas prints are matte.

No. Our Giclée and Metallic Canvas surfaces are semi-gloss. Matte Canvas is the choice for minimizing sheen.

Canvas is only suitable for paintings.

No. Canvas also works well for photography, including portraits, landscapes, travel images, and black-and-white work.

A canvas print needs an outer frame.

Not necessarily. A stretched gallery wrap can be displayed without a decorative frame. Rolled canvas still needs additional preparation before hanging.

Our Recommendation

For a classic starting point, consider Giclée Canvas.

Choose Metallic Canvas for artwork that benefits from a luminous finish, or Matte Canvas when controlling reflections is a priority.

Consider the image and its intended display location together. A dramatic finish may complement one photograph, while a quieter presentation allows another to work better in the room.
