How Do I Print a Smaller Image on a Larger Sheet Without Cropping?

Sometimes you may want the artwork itself to appear smaller than the final paper sheet, with intentional white space surrounding it.

This is different from ordering a standard white border.

To preserve the entire image without cropping, the white space must be included inside the file you upload.

Quick Answer

Create your file at the exact dimensions you want the final paper sheet to be.

For example, to produce an 11" × 14" sheet containing a smaller image:

1. Create an 11" × 14" document with a white background.
2. Place your artwork inside that document at the desired size.
3. Resize the artwork proportionally without stretching or cropping it.
4. Export the complete 11" × 14" composition as one file.
5. Order an 11" × 14" Paper Print.
6. Select Remove 1" Border during customization.

The final sheet will be 11" × 14", including the smaller artwork and all intentional white space.

Why the Order Preview May Try to Crop Your Image

Every print size has an aspect ratio.

An 11" × 14" print has a different shape than:

• 8" × 10"
• 12" × 18"
• 16" × 20"
• A square image
• A panoramic image
• Many original camera files

When the uploaded file and selected print size have different proportions, the order customizer may attempt to fill the selected dimensions by cropping the image.

This is called a fill layout.

If you want the entire image preserved, you need a fit layout instead. A fit layout reduces the image until the whole composition fits inside the selected dimensions, leaving unused space around it.

Artbeat’s order customizer does not automatically create fully customizable margins or place a smaller image anywhere you choose on a larger sheet. The most reliable solution is to build the complete sheet layout into the uploaded file.

Fit Versus Fill

Fill

A fill layout enlarges the image until it completely covers the selected print dimensions.

This may crop portions of the image from:

• The top and bottom
• The left and right
• Both directions, depending on the proportions

Fit

A fit layout preserves the complete image.

The image is reduced until it fits within the available space, which may leave:

• White space above and below
• White space on the left and right
• A custom border around all four sides

To control that space precisely, include it in the file before uploading.

Artbeat’s Standard Border Versus White Space in Your File

These are two different things.

Artbeat’s Standard 1-Inch Border

For Paper Prints, the ordered dimensions normally refer to the printed image area.

Artbeat then adds a standard 1-inch white border outside that image area.

For example:

The border adds two inches to both the total width and total height because one inch is added to every side.

White Space Included in Your File

White space created in Photoshop, Canva, Affinity Photo, or another editing program is treated as part of the uploaded image.

For example, an uploaded 11" × 14" file may contain:

• A smaller photograph
• A white background
• Uneven gallery-style margins
• A centered square image
• A signature area
• A custom mat-like presentation

The entire 11" × 14" composition is printed as prepared.

To keep the final sheet at exactly 11" × 14", select Remove 1" Border when ordering.

How to Prepare an Exact 11" × 14" Sheet

1. Create the Final Canvas

Create a new document measuring:

11" × 14"

For high-quality printing at 300 PPI, the corresponding pixel dimensions are:

3300 × 4200 pixels

A lower resolution may still be printable, but 300 PPI is a strong target when the original file contains enough detail.

2. Use a White Background

Set the document background to white.

This white area will become the visible blank paper surrounding the artwork.

3. Place the Artwork Inside the Document

Add your image to the 11" × 14" canvas.

Reduce its size proportionally until the complete image fits within the document.

Do not stretch the image independently in one direction, as this can distort the artwork.

4. Position the Image

Place the image where you want it to appear.

It may be:

• Perfectly centered
• Positioned slightly higher for a gallery-style presentation
• Surrounded by equal margins
• Given a larger lower margin for a title or signature
• Aligned according to an existing design template

The uploaded file should represent the complete final layout.

5. Remove Nonprinting Guides

Editing guides, crop marks, rulers, and application overlays do not normally appear in an exported file.

However, any visible lines, blocks, masks, or guide graphics included in the final exported image will print.

Before exporting, verify that the file contains only:

• The intended artwork
• The intended white background
• Any text, signature, or design elements you want printed

6. Export the Completed File

Export the complete 11" × 14" layout as a high-quality image file.

A high-quality JPEG is recommended for most Paper Print orders.

The exported file should already contain the smaller image and all intentional white space.

How to Order the Prepared File

After preparing the full layout:

1. Upload the completed 11" × 14" file.
2. Select an 11" × 14" Paper Print.
3. Confirm that the complete white canvas appears in the crop preview.
4. Avoid zooming the image until it fills the frame.
5. Select Remove 1" Border.
6. Review the final crop and orientation carefully before placing the order.

Because the uploaded file already has an 11:14 aspect ratio, the complete composition should fit the selected print size without additional cropping.

What Happens If You Leave the Standard Border Enabled?

Suppose your uploaded file is already an 11" × 14" composition containing:

• A smaller image
• Custom white margins
• The exact layout you want

If the standard Artbeat border remains enabled, another one-inch border will be added outside the entire uploaded composition.

The result would be:

This may create more white space than intended and will change the final physical dimensions.

Select Remove 1" Border whenever the uploaded file already represents the complete final sheet.

Can Artbeat Add Custom Margins for Me?

The standard ordering tool supports:

• Artbeat’s standard 1-inch border
• No additional border

It does not currently provide controls for individually setting custom top, bottom, left, and right margins.

For custom white space, prepare the complete layout before uploading.

Common Misconceptions

Selecting 11" × 14" automatically places my entire image on an 11" × 14" sheet.

Not necessarily.

If the uploaded image has a different aspect ratio, the customizer may crop it to fill the selected dimensions.

The standard white border makes the image smaller inside the ordered size.

The standard border is added outside the ordered image area and increases the final sheet dimensions.

Only nonprinting guides created by editing software are excluded from the exported image.

Any visible guide, line, mask, block, or blackout area included in the exported file may print.

Selecting Remove 1" Border will remove the white space in my uploaded file.
